cool (and cheap) science experiment

I have this book at home filled with experiments for the munchkins to try. I hate when they say they are bored. This is better then tv or video games and when they cant go outside because of the weather or because of like yesterday the backyard had workers in it, this gives them something to do. Michael Jr actually did this one and it is pretty cool.
It is called walking water.

I know it is hard to read but it is very simple.
We varied ours a bit, but the main idea is you have water in one glass that is at a higher elevation then the empty second glass. You then drop one end of paper towel, folded, into the full cup of water and then the dry end into the empty cup.
Something like this (we just used a bigger cup instead of putting it up higher).

So then Michael Jr would write down all his findings and at what time they happened.
It was really pretty cool to see him get so excited that he could actually see the water "walking" down the paper towel. Then when the cup started filling up with water he really got happy!!

This is a really bad picture but you can kind of see the line at the bottom of the glass that is the water line. By this morning the glass is full.
It was a great experiment if your munchkins love science. We are going to change it up with different sizes of paper towels and use colored water this time. Just to spice it up a bit!!

I'll have to try that one with my younger kids. :)
